Web Hosting Support

To maintain your WWW site you will connect to one of our servers via FTP and log in using the account created for you. Note that this account is completely separate from your Uniserve Online Internet access account. You will need to log in to your unique URL (ie, www.yourcompany.com).

Getting Started

When you log in to the Uniserve web server you will start out in your "home" directory. Each user has a separate home directory. No other user can view or modify files within your "home" directory unless you explicitly allow them to do so. You will have a "public_WWW" subdirectory in your "home" directory. The www directory is a symbolic link (symlink) to your root WWW site directory. Placing files or subdirectories into www allows the files to be accessed via the World Wide Web. Another directory you will have in your home directory is "public_cgi". This is where you place your CGI programs for use on your site.

Your default or "home" page should be called either home.html, index.html, default.html or welcome.html. If you are restricted to three letter extensions, .htm will also work. The default document is displayed when a browser does not specify a specific HTML document, ie: typing http://www.uniserve.com/ results in "defaul.htm" being displayed. This also works in any directories you create for your site.
